If you desire community as much as a roof over your head, then River City Housing Collective might be the right fit for you! RCHC is a cooperative alternative to the traditional landlord-tenant relationship. We were founded in 1977 as an answer to the lack of affordable housing options in Iowa City, and we currently own three historic homes, a combined 35 rooms, near downtown. We're a member-directed non-profit dedicated to providing quality, affordable housing for students and community members.

We are our own landlords, so our houses are managed and operated through the collective efforts of our members. Shared responsibility for cooking, cleaning, maintenance, and administrative tasks allows RCHC to continue to grow in its mission of sustaining a healthy physical and social environment for all of its members.

Bloom County House is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and was the rooming house inspiration for the nationally-syndicated comic strip, Bloom County. As with all of our houses, Bloom has curbside recycling and onsite compost. Laundry is free, and there's a bathroom on every floor. Bloom's members maintain a thriving front lawn gardening operation through the use of raised beds, and RCHC's wood shop is also located in Bloom's basement.

We currently have rooms available at all three houses for the leasing period beginning on August 3rd as well as immediate and summer sublets. Bloom has 11 bedrooms, which vary in cost based on size and features, and there are currently five rooms open for immediate sublet, ranging in price from $295-$467 (utilities included). That flat-rate monthly utilities fee covers all basic amenities as well as Wi-Fi.

You'll have a private room that is your personal sanctuary, but community is built and sustained through everyday interactions, so you'll share a kitchen, dining room, living room and other facilities with your housemates. You'll also have the benefit of beautiful outdoor commons, including porches, yards, and garden beds at each house.

Living cooperatively means sharing resources as well, so all members participate in a food plan, where they purchase food collectively and cook dinner for their House twice a month. Your monthly house fee covers the cost of bulk food purchasing and weekly grocery shopping as well as various other household staples like toilet paper, laundry detergent, and cleaning supplies.

We're also pet-friendly!
